TASCAM DR-10X
By Brian Long
Introduction
The TASCAM DR-10X is an ultra-compact plug-on audio recorder designed to connect directly to an XLR handheld microphone, creating a highly portable cable-free recording system for interviews, journalism, news gathering, conferences, meetings, seminars, and field production. Its locking XLR connector provides a secure attachment to compatible dynamic microphones and battery-powered condenser microphones, including shotgun microphones used for location recording.
The DR-10X records mono WAV/BWF audio at 44.1 or 48kHz in 16-bit or 24-bit resolution, with MP3 recording also available for applications where smaller files are preferred. Dual recording can simultaneously create a lower-level safety copy, while automatic gain control, manual level adjustment, limiting, low-cut filtering, headphone monitoring, and an easy-to-read OLED display provide practical tools for reliable field recording. At just 56.3g without a battery, the DR-10X adds professional recording capability with minimal size and weight.

- Broadcast Wave Format: BWF support stores time information in file metadata for professional production and archival workflows.
- MP3 Recording: Firmware version 2.0 and later supports space-efficient MP3 recording at 128 or 192kbps.
- Mono Recording Architecture: Purpose-built single-channel design is optimized for individual microphones and spoken-word applications rather than unnecessary stereo recording.
- Dual Recording Mode: Simultaneously creates a second recording at a lower level to provide a safety track when recording unpredictable sources.
- Selectable Safety Level: Dual recording can create the secondary file at either -6dB or -12dB relative to the main recording.
- Automatic Gain Control: Automatic level adjustment provides a straightforward option for interviews and situations where manual gain riding is impractical.
- Manual Recording Level: Input level can also be adjusted manually when more precise control is required.
- Limiter: Built-in limiting helps protect recordings from unexpected signal peaks and overload.
- Low-Cut Filter: Reduces unwanted low-frequency noise such as handling noise, wind, HVAC rumble, and environmental vibration.
- Headphone Monitoring: Dedicated headphone output allows the microphone input to be monitored and recorded files to be checked directly from the recorder.
- OLED Display: Easy-to-read organic EL display provides clear access to recording status, levels, settings, and other operating information.
- Sliding Record Control: Dedicated sliding record switch allows fast operation while reducing the chance of accidental button presses.
- Hold Function: Helps prevent unintended operation while a recording is in progress.
- Instant Recording at Power-On: Recording can begin immediately by operating the record switch while powering the unit on.
- Automatic File Closing: Helps protect recorded material by automatically closing the current file before battery power is exhausted.
- microSD / microSDHC Recording: Uses readily available removable flash media with capacities up to 32GB.
- USB File Transfer: Micro-USB connection allows recordings to be transferred to a computer without removing the memory card.
- Single AAA Battery Operation: Compact design requires only one AAA battery for portable field use.
- USB Bus Power: Can also operate from USB bus power when appropriate for the recording setup.
- Ultra-Compact Design: Weighs only 56.3g without a battery, minimizing additional weight when attached directly to a microphone.
